At the root of every single change during this phase is a finely orchestrated biological awakening driven by your endocrine system.
Understanding what is happening under the hood transforms puberty from a period of self-consciousness into a powerful process of body literacy. Here is what is actually going on during the first major chapter of the female hormonal lifecycle.
The Biological Spark: How Puberty Actually Starts
Long before any visible physical changes appear, a hidden biological countdown begins in the brain.

- The Brain's Signal: The hypothalamus (the control center in the brain) begins releasing a hormone called Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) in subtle pulses, typically during sleep.
- The Pituitary Wake-Up: GnRH signals the pituitary gland to release two key messengers: Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH).
- The Ovaries Go to Work: LH and FSH travel through the bloodstream to the ovaries, prompting them to begin producing Estrogen—the primary hormone responsible for female development.
The Physical Transformation: What Estrogen & Androgens Do
As estrogen levels begin to climb, the body undergoes rapid structural and cosmetic changes over a span of several years:
1.The Growth Spurt & Structural Changes
Estrogen triggers rapid bone development, causing a noticeable growth spurt. Simultaneously, it instructs the body to shift its center of gravity by widening the pelvis and redistributing adipose tissue (fat) to the hips, thighs, and chest.
2.Skin Shifts and Adolescent Acne
It isn't just estrogen rising during puberty; the adrenal glands also begin producing mild male hormones called androgens (like DHEA).
- Androgens stimulate the skin's sebaceous glands, increasing oil production.
- When excess oil mixes with dead skin cells and surface bacteria, it leads to clogged pores, inflammation, and adolescent acne—most commonly around the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin).
